  • Today, I saw that my Kindle eBook was the #1 new release in Pharmacy.

  • However, I realize that this is virtually meaningless because this is my sales page (below). Yes, that’s right, one kindle eBook sale. That’s all it took to get #1 New Release in the 'Pharmacy' category today.

  • However, this is my reaction.

  • The reason for this is because at the minimum, I know that I helped at least one person today and that is an accomplishment in and of itself. My booklet isn’t really selling all that much; I’m at less than $150 in royalties almost a month into this thing (since publication date). Considering I put somewhere between 50 to 100 hours into this book, this would translate to an hourly rate of $1.50 to $3 before considering taxes.

  • However, it is important to realize that the time is fixed (well, not really because now I must spend time marketing this thing), and the profits will only increase over time, so maybe it’ll be worth it - financially speaking. Each sale is a win for the pharmacy student/pharmacist reading it, so that keeps me going. I’ll tell you this; I now realize that writing the book and spending countless hours reading and revising it was only like 30% of the work. The other 70% is marketing and getting sales. As much as I don’t want to spend time figuring out how to sell this, the reality is that if I don’t market this book, it will not sell. If it does not sell, it will help no one.

  • I imagine it’s kind of like being a pharmaceutical company and creating an amazing new drug, which has a significant efficacy signal and place in therapy for the treatment of a condition. However, that pharmaceutical company must speak to KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) and MCOs (Managed Care Organizations) about the drug, market the drug, and advertise to help patients. It is an inevitable reality; in order to help people, you must create awareness, market, and sell.

  • Perhaps, the strategy here is to use affiliate marketers to help sell this book. I’m considering potentially going through payhip and selling digitally as a next step.

  • Interestingly, most of my demographic prefers paperbacks, but the sample size to date is rather small. I wonder how this will change once I start selling through payhip.
